Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS)

Insulation funding to improve the energy efficiency and comfort of your home

What is the Great British Insulation Scheme?

The Great British Insulation Scheme is a government initiative which aims to help more people insulate their homes and enjoy:

Enhanced energy efficiency

Greater comfort

A reduction in energy bills

Previously known as ECO+, the re-branded Great British Insulation Scheme launched in April 2023 and is due to run until March 2026.

A total of £1 billion has been pledged to the scheme, with a clear mission to help at least 300,000 households across the country with the cost of a home insulation upgrade.

It’s estimated the Great British Insulation Scheme will save consumers up to £400 a year on energy bills.

How does the scheme work?

In a similar way to ECO4, the Great British Insulation Scheme obliges energy suppliers to help customers with insulation upgrades and reduce their heating bills.

Costs could be covered in full through the scheme, or you may be offered the insulation for a contribution, depending on your circumstances.

Am I eligible?

The scheme aims to help those living on lower incomes and struggling to pay bills in the first instance.

However, the initiative also extends to those living in the least energy-efficient homes in the country.

This makes the Great British Insulation Scheme as inclusive as possible, with more households than ever able to improve energy efficiency and lower their energy costs.

et’s take a look at how the eligibility criteria breaks down:

Low-income households

You have a good chance of qualifying for free insulation if:

You live in social housing or have a total household income of under £31,000 a year

You may also qualify if:

You own your home (or in some cases rent from a private landlord)

Your home has an energy performance certificate (EPC) rating of D or below as a homeowner, or E or below as a private tenant

Someone living at your property qualifies for the below benefits.

Qualifying benefits:

Energy-inefficient households

Households in this category may qualify for funding towards one type of insulation via the scheme.

Please note: in some cases, and depending on your circumstances, you may also have to pay a proportion of the cost.

To be eligible for funding, all of the following needs to apply to you:

You own your home or rent (either privately or from a housing association)

Your home is in council tax band A to D in England, A to E in Scotland and Wales

Your home has an EPC rating of D or below

If you rent a property, you will need permission from your landlord before you apply for the Great British Insulation Scheme.

How can my home benefit from an insulation upgrade?

Lower energy bills

Switching from your traditional heating system to an energy-efficient boiler can result in huge energy savings and a significant reduction in energy bills.

Reduced carbon footprint

Energy-efficient heating systems produce fewer emissions than other methods, making them the eco-friendly choice for your home and the planet.

Increased property value

Green energy sources are proven to increase the value of a property, with a growing demand for renewable energy amongst savvy buyers.

Insulation upgrades available through the Great British Insulation Scheme

Cavity wall insulation:

Your walls are responsible for 35% of your home’s heat loss. An upgrade of your cavity wall insulation is a quick and cost-effective way to keep the heat in, tackle damp problems, and lower your carbon footprint.

Loft insulation

Did you know a quarter of your home’s heat can be lost through the roof? Improving your loft insulation is a fail-safe way to boost your home’s warmth while lowering your heating bills.

External wall insulation

Where cavity wall work isn’t suitable, external wall insulation will boost your home’s warmth, lower your bills, and keep condensation at bay.

Internal wall insulation

If you have a solid wall property, internal wall insulation is a must to reduce the amount of heat you lose and improve the energy efficiency of your home.

Room in roof insulation

Designed specifically for properties with rooms set into the roof. Room in roof insulation creates a thermal barrier to prevent heat loss and ensure top-tier comfort within your converted space.

Other measures included in the scheme:

Pitched roof insulation

Flat roof insulation

Underfloor insulation

Solid floor insulation

Park home insulation
