The property

Gloucestershire Constabulary oversees three key operational sites in Stroud, Gloucester, and Coleford within the Forest of Dean. With an ambition to achieve net zero by 2035, the adaptation of the buildings on these sites to renewable energy presented significant challenges.

The aging infrastructure of the existing structures led to substantial heat loss, making them costly to run. However, given the critical requirement of ensuring an uninterrupted service delivery for the police force, one of the biggest challenges was ensuring all the sites remained fully operational throughout the decarbonisation works.

Our approach

Cotswold Energy Group, part of the SCIS Group, provided an end-to-end solution tailored to Gloucestershire Constabulary’s needs, supporting its goal to achieve net zero by 2035. This approach included:

  • Extensive surveys: A detailed analysis of the building fabric, heat loss, and roof conditions to inform the project scope.
  • Renewable technology:
    • Installation of nine 43 kW air source heat pumps to replace gas boilers.
    • A new hot water system and 300 upgraded radiators.
    • 222 innovative in-roof solar PV panels.
  • Integrated project delivery: From feasibility and design, to installation, commissioning, and ongoing support, all stages were managed in-house for optimal control and efficiency.

The results

The project delivered transformative results for Gloucestershire Constabulary:

  • Financial savings: Expected savings of £850,000 over the system’s 20-year lifespan, contributing to long-term cost reduction.
  • Carbon reduction: Nearly 4,000 tonnes of CO₂ saved over the system’s 20-year lifespan.
  • Enhanced comfort: Improved heating systems created a more comfortable working environment, marking a significant improvement over previous conditions.
I can’t fault the company for their professionalism and assistance. They have all been, without exception, excellent people to work with… the whole feeling of the completed job is one of high quality. The difference it’s made is massive; this building’s never been so comfortable to work in.
